Multiplayer bugs undercut the Master Chief Collection’s biggest launch yet

Yes, it has finally happened. Halo has returned to PC and not in a small way. As a product of its staggered release schedule that follows the chronological order of the series’ timeline, the final Bungie-developed Halo game, Reach, is now on PC. There is an Xbox One release as well, but in this review, I will be solely looking at the PC version of this venerable shooter that launched over nine years ago, exclusively on the Xbox I went into this game as blind as can be, as I assume many other PC players will be doing. Read on below to find out what I thought of this classic Halo entry’s re-release, diving into the campaign and multiplayer departments, the port performance, keyboard and mouse handling on the brand new platform, along with anything in between. Halo: Reach is only a piece of a much larger puzzle that’s still being built, but just how much content comes stuffed in this initial package is astounding, even knowing that some of it – like Forge and Theater – isn’t even here yet. Straight off the bat, I can tell you this is a marvelous port, as I didn’t experience a single crash or instability while playing the game.

Talk:Halo 2/Archive 2

The first paragraph of the Halo 2 plot seems to state the torture of an Elite admiral Arbiter twice. I don’t have the guts to go and edit the page, so just thought I’d point this out. I’m pretty sure anyone who’s ever played Halo 2’s Xbox Live multiplayer has found an abundance of little snot-nosed kids who constantly curse and, by their high voices, are too young to be playing the game. I’m not sure if it exactly fits into the Halo 2 article, but it’s becoming such a big problem that it might be considered.

This mod silences the music that plays at the beginning and end of Halo 2 Anniversary Multiplayer games. Totally EAC/Matchmaking.

For the first time ever, the series that changed console gaming forever comes to PC with six blockbuster games in one epic experience, delivered over time and available for individual purchase. Honoring the iconic hero and his epic story, The Master Chief Collection offers players their own exciting journey through the Halo saga. Starting with the incredible bravery of Noble Six in Halo: Reach and ending with the rise of a new enemy in Halo 4, the games will release in order of the fictional story.

Each game released into the collection also adds new multiplayer maps, modes and game types, building a unified multiplayer suite that expands over time. When finished, The Master Chief Collection will have the most diverse and expansive Halo multiplayer experience to date, with more than multiplayer maps including the original Halo Combat Evolved maps and Spartan Ops maps. Not to mention, countless ways to play with community created Forge content.

The first installment of the Halo: The Master Chief Collection , in the form of Halo: Reach, has finally been released on PC and it’s already become the 3rd most played game for concurrent users on Steam. Meaning the move to Steam and Microsoft opening up their games to be released on more platforms and storefronts being a smart one, while reviews are quite positive so far too, showing a lot of love has been put into the PC port of these iconic and beloved titles.

Of course one of the first questions that would come to mind for PC gamers now is how quickly mods will start cropping up for the collection. Unfortunately there isn’t official mod support from Xbox Game Studios and Industries , the studio who took over the development of the Halo series after Bungie left to create Destiny, for the collection just yet although it has been announced to be in the works. However, that doesn’t mean they haven’t made life a little bit easier for modders with one small technical feature.

Players can actually bypass Halo: Reach’s anti-cheat tools, included to ensure fair matches online through the main matchmaking system, allowing players to play around with the campaign and customs. Each time you start up Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC, you’ll be asked to confirm whether you want to start with the anti-cheat tools in use or not, but won’t be able to join matchmaking of course if you choose to have them off.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection On PC May Let You Sell Mods

I have some long-term goals to empower the modding community more than they already are, but I’m not quite ready to go into details yet on that,” Fahrny stated in the post. Fahrny further expanded on the topic by stating that establishing the most important elements of modding for Halo on PC requires proper ground rules and guard rails. Once the EULA gets a green flag, Microsoft can begin their work on “what potential tools our team can commit to and prioritize work around them.

Fahrny also expressed how he is a fan of games that offer support for modding. He believes that modding helps in extending the longevity of games and gives players the freedom to tinker around. Modding also gives the community something new in return.

Since the start of June I have been regularly uploading these mods to the Halo: The Master Chief Collection Mod Nexus, and between then and the time of writing this post the mods have had over 4, combined downloads. But what do these mods actually do? The answer varies from mission to mission. Initially the project began as a simple idea to implement one tiny change to Halo 2: I wanted more allied Grunts on Uprising. After downloading Assembly and fiddling around with several failed attempts, I finally figured out how to ensure that the 2 hapless Grunts that spawn to help the player at the start of the mission are now 4 hapless Grunts.

Or 6 hapless Grunts. Or 8 hapless Grunts. Because the program breaks down the entities in the game into lists and assigns each entry on the list a number, all that is required is to figure out which number correlates to each entity from there the rest falls into place after or so botched experiments.

Halo: Reach PC lets players turn off anti-cheat to make modding easier

In the early s, developer Bungie changed the console-shooter market forever. While first-person shooters certainly existed and were sometimes extremely popular on consoles prior to the arrival of Halo, they often failed to deliver the same thrills as their PC counterparts. Following the launch of Halo: Combat Evolved in , Bungie was gearing up to go even bigger with its next title.

Add to that the pioneering use of Xbox Live, and Halo 2 became perhaps even more of a phenomenon than its predecessor. Coming off of Halo: Combat Evolved, what was the feeling at Bungie surrounding Halo 2 during development? What was the general sentiment of what the team needed to do?

Years of teases and waiting have finally ended with this: Halo is back on PC in officially supported fashion. Rewind to , and Microsoft shoved out a Halo 2 port that required both Games For Windows Live and Windows Vista to run —and shipped in mod-unfriendly fashion. It received nary a patch or useful update and left diehard fans scrambling to patch it into decent shape. If you buy it on Steam, meanwhile, you get one heckuva cool option already: total mod support.

Simply pick the game’s “cheat detection disabled” option upon boot and you can fiddle with every relevant file within a “friends-only” online sandbox, which is fair enough. In spite of some imperfections at launch, Halo Reach ‘s PC version is already a testament to a new attitude at Microsoft about PC gaming.

Microsoft has clarified its stance on mods for Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC, and there are some intriguing details to be learned. In a blog post , senior producer Michael Fahrny said that while it is still relatively early days–after all, only Halo: Reach is available on PC right now with The Master Chief Collection–he said the team is keen to work with fans to build out an offering that could even include the ability to buy and sell mods in the Steam Workshop.

I have some long-term goals to empower the modding community more than they already are, but I’m not quite ready to go into details yet on that,” Fahrny said. He went on to say that one of the “most important” elements of modding for Halo on PC is to ensure the proper “ground rules and guard rails” are in place. The first part of this is creating an End User License Agreement EULA that “clearly defines what we will support being done while also maintaining the integrity of our game service and protected environments think matchmaking.

Once the EULA has been confirmed, Microsoft can get to work on “what potential tools our team can commit to and prioritize work around them. Fahrny also said he is personally a big fan of games with modding support, because the mods people create help extend the longevity of a game by giving the player something new to return to on a regular basis. For modding in MCC, Fahrny said it will be important to lower the barrier to entry “as much as we can” as it relates to the modding tools and mod-managing systems for less technically savvy people.

More official tools, things like Steam Workshop support, etc. Although MCC does not have a complete and official modding program as of yet, PC players are very enterprising and have already created a lot of imaginative and impressive mods. After nearly a decade of begging and pleading, Halo: Reach has finally come to PC. The first in the lineup of games from Halo: The Master Chief Collection to hit the platform, it includes almost everything you’d expect from a modern PC port. One thing is notably missing, though: mod support. At the moment, Industries is working on ironing out all the kinks, so mods are currently off the table.
